Part One
10 Minute Drawing
Critique: Assignment 1 Part 1
My one-minute gesture drawing was very messy and chaotic. I only had enough time to map out the placement of each object and the relative space that they took up. I struggled a little bit with proportion because of the time that I had to finish. By the tenth drawing I was more comfortable with the placement of each object, and I had more time to focus on the proportion of each object to one another. I felt that my strokes had more purpose and were better understood in the 10-minute drawing. I also felt like I didn’t need to go as fast with each piece, so I found myself picking up my charcoal off the page more. My 10-minute piece is far from perfect; however, I feel like it was my strongest of the drawings. Everything was much more proportionate and recognizable. I still couldn’t focus on much of the detail however I was able to add some to bring the drawing to life a little more. I tried to let my lines do the talking and give the drawing form. My image consisted of short and long lines as well as thick and thin lines. Overall, I found it difficult for me to stay away from outlines. I tried to focus on the overall shape of each object by avoiding straight “intentional” lines. I haven’t got the chance to work with vine charcoal at all, so I was struggling with my line thickness. My charcoal was wearing down fast and gave me a worn-down edge that made a lot of my lines look like the same thickness. Overall my experience with line gesture, mass gesture, and scribble line gesture was challenging, however I am happy that I tried it.

Part Two
ORGANIZATIONAL LINE DRAWING/EXTENDED GESTURE
For Part 2 of Assignment 1 I utilized the length of my pencil and a ruler to determine the size of one object to another. With the ruler I was able to lengthen my lines to help me determine where my objects should go in relation to another. After mapping out my drawing I spent quite some time on this piece trying my best to make the space like the still life. I am pretty proud of how it turned out. I did find it hard to draw with the vine charcoal, however there is definitely improvement from Part 1 of this assignment.
