My Vision for my Self Portrait
I like the side profile look, so I think that I am going to incorporate that into my self portrait. I want to keep my emotion and facial expressions neutral, as if I am daydreaming. I love the fine lines that are used in the above portraits. I also want to incorporate shading in my portrait to give my face dimension. I am going to keep my portrait black and white and utilize my different drawing pencils and blending stump.
I was drawn to these particular portraits because of the detail and the line work. I think that all three have similarities to each other, but also some differences. For example the first one, which was drawn by Edward Munch, has a very dark background and a very light face. I love how this contrast makes his work stand out more. I think that it gives the piece emotion without having to show it in facial expressions. A more ambitious part of me wants to draw myself with one emotion, but draw it in another emotion. For example, I could draw myself smiling, but make the background something dark and angry.
The second self portrait was drawn by Raphael. This one gives me fairytale vibes. There is something magical about the ears and the paper that it is drawn on. I love the shading in this piece. It is soft and angelic in a way. I also see some cross hatching. The eyes are also more defined than other features, such as the hair. Because of this portrait I want to add a unrealistic/magical aspect in my portrait. (i.e horns, snake...)
The last self portrait was created by Anna Marie Ellenrieder. The first thing I noticed in this piece was the soft white highlights. It gives the face such a nice glow. I also love the position of the face and how the eyes are looking up into the sky. I hope to use some of these features in my own creation.

My Approach
I decided to add a little bit more of a "unrealistic" element to my self portrait. I decided to express emotion without a harsh facial expression with the symbol of Medusa. Those who look at the Greek Goddess Medusa would turn to stone, therefore taking their emotion and rendering them lifeless. Medusa is also a symbol of survivors of sexual assault. And with that come forced silence for some. For these reasons I decided to incorporate snakes into my background and leave my facial expression neutral. For the finished product I hope to make it look more like myself and add more detail, shading, and highlight.

Medusa Self Portrait
In my final piece I decided to leave the eyes blank to resemble the lack of emotion. I also decided not to add a background because of the detailing of the snakes and I didn't want to take away or crowd the drawing in any way.
